Dr. Paul Kelley at Oxford University found that waking up and working before 10 am some sort of torture in modern times.
Human body has a biological timer, something that experts like to call “Circadian Rhythm.” It’s a genetically pre-programmed cycle that regulates your brain work, energy, hormones, and perception of time. If you wake up before 10am, you’re interfering with your Circadian Rhythm, and eventually you’re stuck with severe imbalances.
“We cannot change our 24-hour rhythms. You cannot learn to get up at a certain time…your liver and your heart have different patterns and you’re asking them to shift two or three hours.”
The 8-hour working day was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century. But, it was designed in accordance with the 24/7 factory productivity, and it differs from our body clock. Ancient men evolved around the cycle of light, not all the business and commerce.
Dr. Kelley explained this in an interview for the British Science Festival:
“We’ve got a sleep deprived society” and “This is an international issue. Everybody is suffering and they don’t have to.”
The doctor was suggesting that the start time in British school should be moved from 8.30 am to 10 am. This theory was tested in a chosen school in Britain, including time and exams. Both attendance and general productivity improved. The students got better grades as well.
This could bring improvements in any other school. We don’t need tired, overworked, coffee-intoxicated zombies working in institutions and companies. We need productive, focused, happy people.
